Who they are
The Wallingford Amateur Radio Group (WARG) is a group of volunteer amateur radio (“ham”) operators in Wallingford. It is part of the Meriden Amateur Radio Club, W1NRG, which has been on the air since 1947.
How they work with Wallingford CERT
WARG works with the Town of Wallingford’s Office of Emergency Management and with Wallingford CERT to provide backup communications in an emergency, whether it is local, regional, statewide or national, when the usual phone and radio systems are down or overloaded. The group also works with the Wallingford Health Department and supports the Medical Reserve Corps.
What they have done for Wallingford
- Radio communications for the Town’s emergency preparedness exercises.
- Passing road closure information between the fire and police departments during flooding and severe weather.
- Radio support at public events such as Celebrate Wallingford and the Fishbein Annual Road Race.
The radios behind the team
- A GMRS repeater for CERT: a local repeater on the General Mobile Radio Service, for CERT operations and general use, run by GMRS-licensed members of the radio club and of Wallingford CERT.
- The W1NRG repeater: 147.360 MHz, +0.6 MHz offset, PL tone 162.2 Hz, for licensed amateur radio operators.
Transmitting on either one takes an FCC license: GMRS for the GMRS repeater, an amateur radio license for W1NRG.
